These are the flags of Norway and the United States that represent the time period of this part of our family's history:
.
This is the flag of Norway that was in use from 1536-1814, when Norway was a part of Denmark.

This was the Flag of Norway 1821-1844. But there were others used, also.
According to the Wikipedia article, "in 1821 the Norwegian parliament (Stortinget) adopted the flag Norway uses today as the flag of Norway. However the King refused to accept the new flag. That started a period of flag confusion. The flag could only be used north of Cape Finisterre, Spain because the foreign service of the King refused to pay North African pirates to recognize it. Instead the Swedish flag was used until 1844."

This is the Flag of Norway 1844-1898. At the time, Norway and Sweden were united, and this flag was flown in Norway to represent the union (the upper left block is half the Norwegian national flag and half the Swedish national flag).

After Norway gained its independence in 1898, it went back to this flag.

When our ancestors arrived in the USA in the 1840s, this was the flag in use at the time.

This, of course, is the flag that the USA has used since 1960, after adding Hawaii and Alaska (the 50th and 49th states respectively) to the Union.
